Hello, my name is Rick Cooper, and I am the Chief of Facilities at the East Cleveland Public Library. I am available around the clock to ensure the comfort, functionality, sustainability, safety, and efficiency of the library and its surrounding infrastructure. I am dedicated to promoting a culture of safety and compliance, ensuring that our library adheres to all regulatory requirements and best practices. My main objective is to create a sustainable and cost-effective facility that supports the mission of the East Cleveland Public Library. I strive to make the library a secure, accessible, and inspiring environment that enhances the well-being of our patrons, visitors, residents, and staff. Looking towards the future, the plan is to generate a more sustainable workplace by introducing green products, incorporating technological innovations, and adopting environmentally friendly practices. Such as using sustainable materials, smart building technologies, energy efficiency hardware, and reducing waste creating a positive impact for our patrons and staff. Snow What Fun! The week is administered by Black Baby Books, a platform that makes it easier to discover children’s books with Black characters. We invite everyone to join the celebration: parents, guardians, authors, illustrators, publishers, educators, librarians, business people, community advocates, and other advocates for Black children. Youth who participate in the dance workshop series will also have the opportunity to showcase what they learned by performing in the Let the Children March dance recital. This all-ages event features live music performances and hands-on activities for the whole family. Meet the musicians in a relaxed setting, with a rotating concert and artist meet-and-greets. Talk to local authors to learn about their books and careers. Get in on the action with percussion activities, a Musical Petting Zoo (provided by The Music Settlement), and in honor of Black History Month, youth will explore black history and culture through writing projects from Lake Erie Ink teaching artists. Adults Creative Crafts and Conversation with Caprice (Craft Club) Every Wednesday during the months of December 2024, January and February 2025 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM We will create one-of-a-kind crafts while having interesting conversations. Crochet Club Thursdays, December 5th, 2024, January 2nd, and February 6th, 2025 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM Crochet is a 16th-century yarn craft that is perfect for cool weather. Crochet has been shown to have many benefits, from increasing dopamine and lowering depression to combating stress and insomnia. Participants are welcome to learn how to create a variation on the "Granny Square," one of the basic patterns in crocheting. Patrons are encouraged to bring in a project you're working on, and let's crochet together. Poetry Writing for Beginners Tuesdays, December 10th, 2024; January 14th, and February 11th, 2025 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM Poetry uses language to evoke emotions in readers and asks them to look at the world in new and unique ways. Learn how to express yourself through the written word in a safe and welcoming environment using simple generative poetry exercises. No experience necessary. Holiday Book Folding Workshop Tuesday, December 17th, 2024 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM As library employees, we firmly believe that any home can always benefit from more books and book-themed decorations! Book folding is the craft of folding the pages within old books to create 3D shapes. This program will teach the basics of book folding and help patrons create a holiday-themed book decoration. No experience necessary; all supplies will be provided. 1000 Cranes for East Cleveland Public Library Tuesdays, January 7th, 21st and 28th, 2025 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM In Japan, the crane is considered a mystical or holy creature that is said to live for a thousand years. Senbazuru, which translates to "one thousand cranes", is a longstanding tradition of folding one thousand origami paper cranes by a person or group of people who will make the wish at the end. January is the perfect time to make a wish for renewal and good fortune, so join us to learn how to fold an origami crane and help us reach our goal of 1000 cranes as we wish for blessings for East Cleveland Public Library. The Art of Letter Writing Thursday, January 16th, 2025 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM In 2025, there are many ways to connect with other human beings, be it through text or e-mail, Facetime or Zoom, and the many various social media platforms available. However, there is something about a physical letter that catches people’s attention. The week of January 12-18th is Universal Letter Writing Week, so we’re going to explore writing letters and postcards, and encourage patrons to consider the various uses for physical letters. So, whether it’s writing to a celebrity requesting an autograph, a politician asking them to change something, or sending a letter or postcard just reaching out to a friend or loved one, come learn about the Art of Letter Writing. How to Be a Wellness Warrior Thursday, January 23rd, 2025 12:30 PM - 2:30 PM Join us for a workshop on health maintenance and the importance of organ donation and transplantation. 6
Blind Date with a Book All February, 2025 February is National Library Lover’s and National Creative Romance Month! Celebrate by going on a Blind Date with a Book at ECPL. Check out a mystery book, fill out a Blind Date card and turn it in. The more dates, the better! Completed cards will be entered into a raffle for a Library-Themed Gift Basket at the end of the month.
